Exchanging Garbage Bags For School Bags

Muhammad Sabir, Pakistan

US$1,000 could be used to Better the lives of 500 slum children without access to education. I would purchase the textbooks, notebooks and pencils that would allow a small group of volunteers to teach them to read and write. These are children of my own community of nomads living in the urban slums of Johar Town, Lahore, Pakistan. They live with their parents in nothing more than tents made of rags, and eventually end up on the streets picking and selling garbage, selling newspapers, washing cars and begging at traffic signals. Their families cannot afford to send them to school and are dependent on their daily earnings to make ends meet.
Illiteracy is a scourge. Education can free these children from degradation, allow them to dream in ways other kids can, and give them choices in life they wouldn’t otherwise have. I know. Read how it has changed mine: http://www.dawn.com/news/1188364.
